Dead brides
Crime: Murder

OK, this story is short and weird, exactly what I was in the mood for.

Wang Hairong is dead. He died in July 2013 and not of natural causes. He was executed for his crimes. Beware, China doesn’t mess about with piddly-ass sentencing. They’re not shy about killing criminals.

According to court records in Yan’an in the northern Chinese province of Shaanxi, Wang Hairong and 2 of his buddies decided to make some easy money. They decided to sell a corpse for a “ghost marriage”.

I told you this was weird.

Ghost marriages are not common throughout China. They are, in fact, illegal but are apparently still in demand in Shaanxi. The idea is that if a family’s adult son dies unmarried, his spirit will be lonely in the afterlife. If he is “married” after death to a dead woman, then he will be content and not bring misfortune to his surviving family.

There is a market in Shaanxi for female corpses, and where there’s a market there are always people willing to supply the product. Women who have died and been buried are being dug up and sold to desperate families for ghost marriages. The fresher the corpse, the higher the price.

Earlier this year 4 people were imprisoned in China for digging up and selling corpses for ghost marriages (see top picture). The “brides” were sold for a total of $38,000, according to court reports. The grave robbers were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 2 years and 4 months to 2 years and 8 months in prison.

I even read about a Chinese couple who sold their sick foster daughter for a ghost marriage — rather than get her medical treatment they were planning to kill her if she didn’t die soon enough. But I digress.

Wang Hairong and his unidentified buddies decided to find themselves a very fresh corpse and spare themselves the effort of digging for it. How entrepreneurial of them — maximum profit for minimum effort.

In May 2011 the threesome persuaded a young woman (identified only by her surname Luo) to accept a ride in their car. She wasn’t to know that it was a ride to oblivion.

The poor woman was strangled to death in that car. She was pregnant when she died. I don’t know if her killer Wang Hairong knew that, but I doubt he much cared.

With the newly dead woman in the car, the evil threesome drove to a nearby town and sold her for 22,000 yuan (that’s about $3600). Wang Hairong took 14,000 yuan and his buddies split the rest.

The news reports don’t say how the killers were caught. Possibly the corpse was much too fresh and much too obviously a victim of murder so somebody with a conscience reported it to authorities. I rather doubt the buyers did the reporting since they were breaking the law too.

Wang Hairong and his pals weren’t the only f*cktards who had engaged in this sort of lazy man’s DIY corpse-making enterprise. In 2007 Song Tiantang was arrested for murdering 6 women and selling their corpses. He was quoted as saying, “Killing people and selling their bodies is less work than stealing them from graves.”

Odds are Song Tiantang was executed too, and deservedly so.

Apparently women just can’t catch a break in China. Right now China overall has a reported birth ratio of almost 120 boys for every 100 girls. Lianyungang in China has 163 boys born for every 100 girls.

That’s a whole lot of missing Chinese women. There are reportedly 50 million females who have been removed from the Chinese population. This imbalance is going to have serious repercussions.

By 2030, projections suggest that more than 25% of Chinese men in their late 30’s will never have married — and NOT by choice.

This alarming shortfall of women is apparently not translating into men treating women any better. According to a recent study in China, one in two men said they used physical and sexual violence against an intimate partner, one in four reported raping a woman, and one in 25 admitted to participating in gang rape.

I feel a rant coming on but I shall contain myself… with difficulty. (*stifle, stifle, stifle*)

So Wang Hairong the lazy murdering bastard paid for his crime with his life. And that’s not a bad thing in my book. He’d murdered Luo and her unborn baby for a fistful of money and got caught. Fortunately he was stopped before he killed any more victims.

I can find no word on his buddies’ fates. I hope they were caught and punished. Alas I can find no picture of the killer or his victim.

RIP, Luo and child.

Rot in hell, Wang Hairong.

I love china, my brother lives in beijing, hes a teacher, and they don’t take no crap. I was reading the other day an article, and it shown the police vans pull upto a location, got a prisoner outta the back, walked him over to a clearing and took a photograph. Then a guy came up behind him and shot him in the back of the head, took another photo, and done, he killed a young girl. I was nearly dancing shouting “why can’t the british take a leaf out of the chinese book” execute the fucker’s. Who knows it might of been this turd who your writing about cleo, and i have no sympathy. The only sad thing is i didn’t get to see this cunt being executed. Some poor pregnant woman murdered over something so Fucking dumb, hey i know it ain’t right but why the fuck couldn’t he just rob a grave, instead of this, i know grave robbing isn’t nice, but a toss up between the two, i’d let them have my corpse no problem, if it was gonna spare a pregnant woman. I know they shouldn’t be doing this at all, but different culture different beliefs. Wish we had the death penalty, damn it.

Cleo, just out of curiosity, what is the picture you’ve included about? Is it the story about those people who were caught and sentenced? And if so can you place the link in a comment for me please, i’d like to read it, if possible, thanks.

Wow, it’s bad enough when you have to worry about the safety of your wife and daughters, but to have to worry about your deceased female relatives too! Bizarre! That poor woman being killed for such a stupid, stupid reason! I am glad her killer is dead.

I wonder how many stolen brides get restolen after their ghost weddings. If the grave robbers didn’t mind digging they could make a whole pile of money off of one corpse. It’s not like their customers could complain to police since it’s all illegal.

I am glad this monster is dead. It’s bad enough that women are too often considered property and treated like they are lesser beings. This asshole actually considered the living, breathing, pregnant woman was only of worth as a corpse. I hope his execution was painful.

China’s going to be up a creek for sure, with the imbalance in m/f birth ratio and no shortage of canadian men happily marrying the chinese women they also happily sponsor into canada, well we might just start seeing an overall decline in the asian population (at least in asia)
