Crimes: Murder, Kidnapping, Rape

Sex trade workers in the Canadian city of Halifax can breathe a little easier now that a killer is going to be off the streets for a long time. Since 1985, 19 sex trade workers have gone missing or have been murdered in Halifax and area, and at least one of those was due to Steven Elliot Laffin of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Nadine Anne Taylor, 29, was the victim. Her boyfriend Gene Hape told investigators she had left her apartment on the evening of July 28, 2010 to make a phone call down the street because she does not have a phone. She did not return and wasn’t heard from ever again. Ms Taylor was reported missing on July 31, 2010.

Gene Hape described his girlfriend as a good woman who had a difficult life. The important part of course is that Nadine Anne Taylor had a life. She had people she loved and who loved her. Steven Elliot Laffin the murdering bastard took that from her.

Steven Elliot Laffin wasn’t unknown to police at the time of Ms Taylor’s disappearance. He’d pled guilty back in 2006 to attempted robbery after he went into a Halifax convenience store with a knife and demanded cash. The court handed him a 2-year conditional sentence. Very generous.

Actually Steven Laffin later went before Judge Jamie Campbell to request an amendment to his sentence and the judge was impressed enough to note his “dignified carriage” and “carefully chosen business suits”. Judge Campbell even described the bastard as an “articulate and respectful man” who had a “bright future” ahead of him.

“He works more than regular hours. He has been promoted to a supervisory position. He has money saved and is paying off his debts. Apparently he has not lost his work ethic. He could have taken a very different approach,” said Judge Campbell at the time.

The judge also said the poor Steven Laffin was driven to crime after he lost his job and his marriage fell apart. Awwww.

Now I don’t know what happened to Steven Elliot Laffin between 2006 and 2009 but he morphed from being armed and dangerous into a downright sadistic hellbeast. By 2010 he was pure evil and lethally murderous.

On August 3, 2009 Steven Elliot Laffin attacked a sex trade worker named Crystal Lynn Hape in a quarry of all places. I do not know if she is related to Gene Hape, Nadine Taylor’s boyfriend.

As a result of the attack Steven POS rapist Laffin was charged with sexual assaulting Crystal Lynn Hape and threatening her. He was scheduled to go to trial but the victim was 15 minutes late for court. Only 15 freaking minutes late and already the case had been thrown out. Steven f*cking hellbeast Laffin was freed and released back onto the streets to continue his evil ways.

Why the f*ck couldn’t the judge wait 15 minutes, especially when the case dealt with sexual assault and violence and threats of death? Those are serious charges and you’d think that Canadian justice would show some tiny bit of patience with slightly tardy witnesses. Fifteen freaking minutes!

Nadine Taylor

Nadine Taylor

Less than 2 months later, on July 28, 2010, Nadine Taylor went missing — dead at the hands of the sick and twisted Steven Laffin. And he was only getting started.

On July 31, 2010 — the very day Nadine Taylor was reported missing — Steven the savage beast Laffin married his girlfriend Joanna.

Joanna was a trusting soul who would never have believed that her brand new husband was a rapist/kidnapper/killer. They had been living together for a while already in her home on Weyburn Road.

That home was likely the scene of the murder of Nadine Taylor. The poor woman was, at the very least, attacked there. Her blood was spattered all over the basement.

Joanna was so trusting that she believed Steven Laffin when he said he’d been mugged in the driveway and had gone into the basement to clean up so that the rest of the house wouldn’t get messed up.

Joanna had been out of town attending her stagette party when Nadine Taylor was kidnapped and murdered in the basement.

Because guests were going to be coming to the house, and because she believed his bullshit mugging story, Joanna helped Steven Laffin mop up the mess.

On August 16, 2010, the newlywed Steven Elliot Laffin nabbed himself another sex trade worker.

WTF? That’s less than 3 weeks since he murdered Nadine Taylor!

Steven the evil bastard Laffin literally grabbed the woman by the throat and choked her until she was unconscious. When the poor woman regained consciousness she found her mouth was sealed with duct tape and she was bound at the ankles and wrists. She was totally at the mercy of her abductor.

Not surprisingly Steven Elliot Laffin raped his latest victim. He slammed her face into the ground and threatened to kill her. I’m sure she believed he would have. Hell, I certainly do.

Steven Elliot Laffin stuffed the woman into the trunk of his car and started driving. I am pretty sure we all know what he was intending to do with her but this extremely brave and feisty woman wasn’t having any of it. She actually managed to escape from the vehicle as it traveled down Old Sambro Road in Halifax. After jumping from the car which was moving at 70 km per hour, she also managed to get help at a nearby house.

The woman called 911 to report the kidnapping and rape. On August 16 Steven Elliot Laffin found himself in prison charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, uttering threats and unlawful confinement.

I imagine he hadn’t bothered hiding his identify from his victim because he didn’t anticipate she’d live through the ordeal.

Search of Laffin homeHis arrest is what put Steven Elliot Laffin squarely on police radar for Nadine Taylor’s disappearance. In September 2010, police were investigating Ms Taylor’s disappearance as a homicide. Even though her body hadn’t been found, police were sure she was dead.

Information from witnesses led police to Steven Laffin. They spent 7 days searching the house on Weyburn Road. They found Nadine Taylor’s blood. Thank goodness Steven Laffin and Joanna had been too rushed to be thorough — the house looked clean enough to them but not too clean for forensics.

Still without a body in October 2010, investigators went ahead and charged Steven Laffin with 2nd-degree murder.

His marriage to Joanna was subsequently annulled.

Steven LaffinEven in prison — Central Nova Scotia Correctional Centre — Steven Laffin couldn’t contain his violent tendencies. In August 2011 he attacked fellow inmate Clarence Michael McLeod viciously enough that the man needed stitches.

Steven Laffin pled guilty to attacking Clarence McLeod and was sentenced to 3 months in prison. Hell, he was there anyway, just waiting for his other trials.

On October 4, 2012, Steven Elliot Laffin pled guilty to the attack on the woman who escaped from the trunk of his car.

Search for Nadine TaylorOn Friday, March 1, 2013, the murdering bastard led police to a wooded area in East Chezzetcook, about 35 km east of Halifax, where they uncovered and recovered Nadine Taylor’s remains.

Finally the murdered woman’s family can lay her to rest.

Yesterday, March 7, 2013, Steven Elliot Laffin pled guilty to the 2nd-degree murder of Nadine Taylor.

The victim’s grieving father said the guilty plea provided him “some” closure but he said “it will never go away but it’s good to know that now she can have a burial anyway, not be thrown in the ground like dirt.”

“It was good to get that over with as well as to put Nadine to rest.”

Steven LaffinWith the guilty plea Steven Laffin was automatically sentenced to life in prison for that charge BUT has to return to court in April regarding his parole eligibility.

The Crown and the defense are going to make a joint recommendation that Steven Elliot Laffin, 36, serve a 12-year sentence for the kidnapping and assault charges to be served concurrently with the life sentence.

As well the Crown and the defense are going to make a joint recommendation that Steven Elliot Laffin serve 13 years before he is eligible for parole. The Parole Board of Canada would then decide when and if he is to be released.

Excuse me but WTF? Thirteen paltry years before he can apply for parole?!? That would make him all of 49. He kidnapped 3 women, raped 3 women, and murdered 1 woman (and I’m sure he was trying to make that 2), and the Crown thinks 13 years is a good recommendation?!?

Hell no!

Crown attorney Susan MacKay said she believes Steven Laffin is “a very dangerous man.” Well, duh!

Her fellow Crown attorney Rick Woodburn assures us, “Mr. Laffin is getting a life sentence. For the rest of his life, he’s going to be on some sort of supervision.”

Rick Woodburn tells us that in typical 2nd-degree murder cases, the parole eligibility date is between 13 and 15 years.

And the mitigating factor in Laffin’s case is that he revealed the location of the body.

“We look at the totality of the circumstances,” Rick Woodburn said. “We do have Nadine Taylor’s body back. It was important for the family and it was important for closure for the family.”

OK, I get that. It was good to get Nadine Taylor buried. Her family needed it and she deserved it.

But I can’t help thinking this isn’t a typical 2nd-degree murder case. I can’t help thinking the only reason the murderous sadistic bastard Laffin ever stopped killing was because he was caught! And I can’t help thinking when he’s released he’ll just pick up where he left off.

Nadine Taylor’s father predicted that the murderer may not survive long enough to get paroled. He noted that his daughter’s “got some friends who’d like to talk to him and shake his hand.”

So now we have to wait until April for the sentencing hearing. And after that it will be in the hands of the Parole Board of Canada to keep Canadians safe from this hellbeast killer.

Unless, of course, it winds up in the hands of Nadine Taylor’s friends.

Long may Steven Elliot Laffin rot in hell!

RIP, Nadine Taylor. And all the best to the other victims of that bastard’s brutality.

I am glad that Nadine’s body was found and returned to her family. Still, the Crown shouldn’t give much credit to her killer. He should never see the light of day again.

  2. moodymagic says:

I hope Nadine’s friends do step up. Rest in peace Nadine

    • B. (Nadines close friend) says:

The boys especially but they are protecting the fckn bastard on West 5 er whatever… (the P.C. range) and anyone that is known family connection to Nadine they will not let anywhere near Laffin in Burnside. He’s impossible to get too! But TRUST AND BELIEVE that one a these days one of the boys will get his sadistic sick trick crack smoking ass!! It will happen.
Slot of people knew Nadine so one of these days his ass will be caught slippin!

Sorry for the loss of your friend. May she rest in peace knowing how loved she was.

      • bengalpuss says:

Laffin, will get his comeupance im sure of that. And im sorry that you lost your friend by this bastard. I don.t understand why the prison service protects these scumbag’s, i wouldn’t feel bad about letting anyone near this beast to whoop his arse. Someone someday will drop their guard, and that evil beast will get what he deserves. Once again sorry for the loss of your friend nadine.

  3. bengalpuss says:

What a piece of shit, this pig will also have the time he spent on remand knocked off his sentence. I like it when they said “He did lead us to her body so that is a mitigating factor” Nadine Taylor, wouldn’t have been a dead body in the ground if it wasn’t for this bastard. Also that fucking stupid judge that dismissed the case because the victim was fifteen minutes late, has blood on his hands, because if he would have given a bit of time for the victim to show up, but no he dismissed the case. If he would have waited nadine taylor would still be alive, and that poor woman that was assaulted and raped by this bastard, wouldn’t have had to go through a terrifying and brutal attack. I hope that his bollocks are hacked off in jail, and he is Sodomised On a daily basis.

  4. 2cute says:

This asshole is a wannabe serial killer and I hope the parole board will never ever let him out. He pled guilty and handed over the location of the body for mitigation purposes. He knew he could not explain the victims blood in his house and he was hooped anyway. Why was this not first degree murder anyway?

    • bengalpuss says:

2cute, this toerag isn.t a wanna be serial killer, he is a serial killer. My guess is he’s responsible for a lot of those missing street workers. If that woman wouldn’t have gotten away, this bastard would still be committing his depraved crimes. I still can.t rap my head around them saying “Well he did let us know where the body was” How the fuck is that a mitigating circumstance, she wouldn’t be a dead body in need of finding, if it wasn.t for this sick piece of shit. Theres only one sentence for twat’s like this, and thats either a rope around the neck, a bullet in the head or a needle in the arm, delivering poison.

  5. steve-O says:

If there is any justice he won’t get out of prison alive.

  6. awesomeblossom says:

I wonder if this was his first murder or if any of those missing and murdered women in Halifax are his work too. Regardless he isn’t finished if he can help it. Obviously he’s dangerous even in prison. They’d better search his body cavities daily so he can’t wound or kill anyone again.

  7. Bleaker says:

I went to high school with this guy and he was always a little off…..really quiet in a creepy kind of way. Always had a strange grin on his face.

    • Bengalpuss says:

Bleaker, maybe he was thinking about his future murders, when you saw him grinning. You know what they say “Quite ones are the worst” The guys a liability to women,

  8. colleen says:

This guy is a dangerous offender no different from Paul Bernardo and he should be put in jail for life. We all know what the parole board is like ask our latest victims family that is in the courts now. They will parole him Nova Scotia has the lowest rate of convictions in sexual assaults and sex crimes. Our Courts don’t care . The question is He just did not start at his age now. He has to have had victims before this. Has he always here or has he left a trail . You don’t become a this type of killer at his age. It is disgusting that a judge would comment on his appearance as he did I guess he forgot about Ted Bundy. The case of the assault of the victim who was late was thrown out but he wasn’t found not guilty. He must be on a bad date list. There are other victims and these victims would help other future victims if they came forward this could be a dangerous offender action. Our legal system in Nova Scotia is poor when in it deals with violence against women. Even the women judges are bias.

  9. me. says:

my father loved Nadine very much, unfortunately he committed suicide in 2012 so he never got to know they found her. Crystal was married to my father Genes brother, i feel so terrible for Nadine’s family she was a very nice person and she nor any women deserves this. i miss her and my father everyday.

  10. I.M.S. says:

I think his experience with nearly going to trial was what made him decide to start killing the women he attacked, to ensure they couldn’t testify against him. I wish someone at the news had looked into his previous job history. No one really discusses his time on working on cruise ships. His ships stopped frequently at Mediterranean countries like Rome and Greece. Someone could have checked if any women working in the sex trade in the port cities where his home vessel made calls were attacked around the same times he was off ship. I left a message about this with Halifax police, but no one ever got back to me.
