Crime: Child Abuse

Steven Edward Kaine Akers is a big, tough guy. Yeah, he’s really tough. He’s ready to duke it out with anybody, it seems — at least anybody who doesn’t have a chance of winning. I guess that’s why he beat up a 7-month-old baby boy — he doesn’t like to lose a fight.

Well, Steven Edward Kaine Akers lost big-time — against adults, in a court of law. He is now a convicted baby beater.

The big, tough guy once had a girlfriend, Olivia Rose Finney. She has a son, Zander Zaine Finney. The three shared an apartment in Pulaski, Arkansas.

Steven Edward Kaine Akers was not the father of 7-month-old Zander. I don’t know why Olivia Rose Finney thought he’d be a good guy to have around her baby, and I sure as hell don’t know why she thought it would be a good idea to leave her baby with him. It wasn’t a good idea in any way, shape or form.

On February 27, 2014, police received an anonymous tip that a child living in the Laurel Wood apartment complex might be in danger. Thank gawd for anonymous tips like that! The baby sure as hell was in danger.

When a police officer arrived at the apartment, Steven Edward Kaine Akers was casually sitting on a couch. He obligingly told the officer, “If it’s about the child, you might as well arrest me now.”

The officer had a talk with Olivia Rose Finney who said that her baby’s head was severely swollen a while before. She told the officer that her boyfriend had discouraged her from taking her baby to the hospital by telling her that Social Services would take Zander away.

Olivia Rose Finney had taken her baby to Wythe County Community Hospital despite what her boyfriend said. X-rays were taken and they came back negative for fractures. Zander was sent home with his mom.

I am pretty sure Wythe County Community Hospital is not staffed with incompetents who couldn’t read the X-rays properly. The real damage to that precious infant was probably done afterward.

I just don’t understand why Olivia Rose Finney didn’t take her baby somewhere safe, or call the police on her boyfriend. Maybe she was afraid Zander would be taken from her by Social Services, but she had to pretty much know her baby was in real danger around Steven Edward Kaine Akers.

The infant’s head was swollen and his scalp was bruised when the police arrived at the apartment on February 27. Thankfully, the poor little guy was removed from the home and taken to New River Valley Medical Center. From there baby Zander was transferred to Roanoke Memorial.

X-rays this time revealed “buckle” fractures to both bones in one forearm, a fracture to his left eye socket, and multiple skull fractures on both sides of Zander’s wee head.

Police had a talk with Steven Edward Kaine Akers who denied hurting little Zander. He said the baby had bumped his head on a coffee table. Riiiight. I find that hard to believe, and I gather the police did too.

When police read Steven Edward Kaine Akers his rights, the story changed. Now he claimed he dropped Zander while he was taking him out of the crib. Riiiight.

On October 20, 2014, Steven Edward Kaine Akers, 23, was convicted in Pulaski County Circuit Court after he entered an Alford plea to the charges of malicious wounding and felony child abuse. The big, tough guy didn’t want to admit his guilt.

The convicted baby beater is scheduled to be sentenced in February 2015. I shall endeavour to keep readers posted — reminders are welcome.

Steven Edward Kaine Akers faces up to 30 years in prison. I truly hope he gets the max. If it hadn’t been for the anonymous tip and police intervention, he could easily have been facing murder charges.

I truly hope that baby Zander is fully recovered and living in a safe, loving environment now. I also hope that Olivia Rose Finney has learned that boyfriends are not necessarily father material, and that she should always err on the side of caution when choosing the men in her life.

Long may Steven Edward Kaine Akers fester and stew in prison. A man who would beat and break a baby belongs behind bars.

BTW, this article was a bit confusing to write because there are two Steven Akers, both 23, from Pulaski, Arkansas, who were charged with beating babies this year. The other one, Steven Edward Akers, allegedly abused his own 6-month-old son, plus his dog. Mercifully the child has recovered.

Wth is going on in Pulaski? Are they inbreeding or something? I bet the two baby beaters are related.

This guy is a nightmare of a boyfriend. Why do young mothers convince themselves that their boyfriends will be good to their kids? I guess a lot of them are too immature to understand that their #1 job in life is being a mother which means sacrificing a lot for their kids.

  4. bulldoggy says:

Did the mother really think her baby’s head had swollen up all on its own? She had to know her boyfriend had bashed the baby about. Stupid twat, should’ve called the cops on his ass right away. Lucky her baby lived.

  5. PJ says:

Hope Olivia Rose Finney has learned to be careful about who she dates. She’s so lucky her baby survived. I hope the little guy didn’t suffer permanent damage. Rot in hell Stevie!

This is actually Pulaski County Virginia. Only reason I know is because I’m from Pulaski and know him.

I can’t believe that the parents that allow their children to be abused by someone is not charged as well. She knew her boyfriend was abusing her child and failed to protect him; she should be punished as well.
