Rhoda Maddox and Orville Wheeler Jr.

Rhoda Maddox and Orville Wheeler Jr
Crimes: Murder, Arson

Boxing day, 1985, was a happy day for Awilda Maddox, 69, of Perrysburg Heights, Ohio. The widow shared her home with her daughter, Rhoda Maddox, and her 8-year-old granddaughter, and recently her son Curtis Maddox Jr had moved back home.

Curtis Maddox Jr had split from his wife and that Christmas he had his 5 children, Jody, William, Evelyn, Jennifer and Dawn, come to visit. Grandma Awilda was thrilled to have all the grandkids there, and did what all grandmas do — she spoiled them.

The 5 Maddox children went to bed totally excited about watching movies in the morning on the new VCR Grandma Maddox had bought them.

Rhoda Maddox and her daughter did not spend the night of December 26th in Grandma’s home. Rhoda Maddox was totally, supremely pissed off with her mother, and there was no fricking way she was going to stay there.

And why was Rhoda Maddox, then 39, so very mad? Because her mom had given Curtis Jr. and his kids that damn VCR and all Rhoda got was yarn! Yarn! No fair! They got a great present and she got a crappy present!

And to add to Rhoda’s outrage, her dear departed father Curtis Maddox Sr. had once upon a time promised her the deed to the house. Problem with that was Awilda Maddox was still living in the house and she wasn’t about to hand over that deed just yet to Rhoda. No fair, no fair, no fair! Whine, whine, whine!

And so, with unfathomable bitterness and an outsized sense of unfairness, Rhoda Maddox left the house to spend the night with her boyfriend, Orville Wheeler Jr. The unholy pair drove around town with Rhoda bitching and kvetching about how her mom is such a mean old lady, and with Orville egging her on.

It didn’t take long for the evil pair of f*cktards to come up with a plan to teach them all a lesson. It was a plan straight from the belly of the beast.

Just after midnight, Orville Wheeler Jr drove to the Maddox house. Everyone inside was asleep as Rhoda Maddox snuck inside. The hellbitch took a blanket off the couch and set it next to the pot-bellied stove. And then she did the unthinkable — she set it on fire!

Before Rhoda Maddox exited the house, she grabbed some valuables she thought were worth saving. Her mother, her brother and his 5 little children obviously weren’t worth saving, not to that bitch.

Rhoda Maddox and Orville Wheeler Jr drove off, leaving the 7 sleeping people trapped inside a burning house. Yeah, they really taught everybody not to give Rhoda crappy Christmas presents!

The problem with this entirely evil situation was that nobody lived to learn the lesson. They all died in the conflagration.

At around 3 a.m. on December 27, 1985, a man driving past the Maddox house saw the flames and immediately called the fire department. By that time the fire was out of control. By 6 a.m. the house was pretty much gone, except for a few burned walls, a melted TV antenna and the swing set.

Authorities found all 7 bodies in the bedrooms. Everyone had died from smoke inhalation. Dead were Awilda Maddox, 69, Curtis Maddox Jr, 33, Jody Maddox, 10, Evelyn Maddox, 9, William Maddox, 8, and the twins Jennifer and Dawn Maddox, 7.

The fire department investigated and determined the fire to be accidental — that the pot-bellied stove was the cause. The monstrous murderers were elated. They carried about with their lives showing no remorse, no guilt. In fact, they felt pretty damn clever they had gotten away with murder.

That’s not to say people didn’t have questions. Rhoda Maddox’s other brother wondered about those valuables that came from his mother’s home. Why weren’t those destroyed in the fire?

William Maddox

After 3 years Rhoda Maddox and Orville Wheeler Jr not only felt they were safe from the law, they acted like they were untouchable. They began yapping to various people about the fire. Not only were they yapping, they were boasting! Those 2 f*ckwads actually were proud enough of murdering 7 people to boast about it.

Thankfully one of the people who was listening to their blabbing called Toledo Crime Stoppers. Kudos to that person! The tip was passed to Maumee Police Detective Doug Brainard who reopened the investigation.

Rhoda Maddox, the bitch queen from hell, was brought in for questioning in July 1988. I’m thinking Detective Doug Brainard is one helluva detective because during her interrogation, Rhoda Maddox confessed to setting the fire. I salute you, Detective Doug Brainard, for your successful interrogation tactics!

Evelyn Maddox

Evelyn Maddox

Rhoda Maddox told the detective that yes, she and Orville Wheeler Jr had concocted the plan to set the house on fire, BUT she was sure nobody would get hurt.

Riiight, setting a house on fire with sleeping people inside couldn’t possibly cause any injuries or deaths. *snort*

Regardless, the hellbitch confessed AND she implicated her boyfriend Orville Wheeler Jr who was soon thereafter arrested too.

Rhoda Maddox finally showed some intelligence when she pled guilty to 7 counts of involuntary manslaughter and 1 count of aggravated arson. Her guilty pleas saved her from the death penalty.

Jennifer Maddox

Jennifer Maddox

Rhoda Maddox, then 42, was sentenced in Wood County Common Pleas Court to 48 to 200 years in prison. The hellbitch never expressed any remorse for her crimes.

Orville Wheeler Jr decided to take his chances with a trial. Too bad for him his girlfriend Rhoda Maddox was the key witness against him. I guess it wasn’t true love after all.

Rhoda Maddox didn’t make things easy for the prosecution. She changed her story every which way, saying Orville instructed her to set the house on fire, then saying Orville himself set the house on fire. Regardless of her conflicting testimony, Orville Wheeler Jr was convicted of 7 counts of involuntary manslaughter and 1 count of aggravated arson.

Orville Wheeler Jr got the exact same sentence as Rhoda Maddox — 48 to 200 years in prison.

Dawn Maddox

Dawn Maddox

And that should have been that, but it wasn’t. See, a new Ohio state law stipulated that the pair of murderers could be released after just 15 years. Fifteen paltry years for 7 deaths! Unfair!

Both Rhoda Maddox and Orville Wheeler Jr have been trying repeatedly to be released on parole.

According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Rhoda Maddox applied for and was denied parole in 1998, in 2003, and again in 2005.

Orville Wheeler Jr applied for and was denied parole in 1998 and 2008. I’m glad to hear that because the evil bastard has made it clear he is not finished with the Maddox family. He actually told a fellow inmate that he killed half the family and all he has to do now is kill the other half.

Rhoda Maddox is set to have a parole hearing on May 1st, 2013. Orville Wheeler’s parole hearing is scheduled for May 14, 2013.

Doug Brainard, now retired, has sent letters to the parole board asking that these vicious killers be kept behind bars.

“I think that he could still be considered dangerous. I don’t think it’s beyond him to be released and commit a crime again,” Doug Brainard said.

“When you set a fire and you kill your entire family and the reason was over Christmas gifts, it was like, are you serious? I think it’s a crime that’s so horrific, I feel they need to stay in prison,” said Doug Brainard. I heartily concur.

I hope the parole board once again denies this evil pair their bid for freedom.

I think Rhoda Maddox and Orville Wheeler Jr should rot in their cells for the rest of their days. They are cold, calculating killers who condemned innocent people including children to a horrible death for the pettiest of reasons. They deserve unceasing hell.

As a side note, Rhoda Maddox’s daughter was raised by a friend, and sadly died of an embolism in her senior year of college. Rhoda Maddox and Orville Wheeler Jr had had a son together, and he also died young — a suicide. So tragic.

RIP Awilda, Curtis Jr, Jody, William, Evelyn, Jennifer and Dawn Maddox. And RIP Rhoda Maddox’s children too.

I shall endeavour to keep readers updated about the parole hearings.

Parole was denied.

I don’t get it. Rhoda Maddox wanted to kill her family because she was jealous, but what the hell was Orville Wheeler’s interest in murder? He gained nothing! And she gained nothing too — she wanted the deeds to the house but she burned the damn thing down! It was all for nothing!

  2. 2cute says:

She killed her family over a VCR! I want to just smack that smirk off her face. She should never have anything to smile about for the rest of her life!

  3. bulldoggy says:

I don’t know which is worse — the bitch burned her family to death over a Christmas present, but the bastard plotted with her over nothing. These two monstrosities didn’t get insurance money, or the house. All he got were bragging rights. And all she got were some trinkets she grabbed from the house. These two are the most pathetic killers. Seven dead for no reason.

Bulldoggy, someone must have been given the insurance money, and smirking slack twat only started boasting about setting the fire 3yrs later, surely someone must have been payed out during that time? Either rhonda or her other brother should have got that money, which one i wonder? But your right about this evil bastard and her accomplice, killed 7 innocent people just because she was miffed that they got a better present than she got. Couldn’t she see that, that vcr was for 5 children and their father, therefore, her yarn probably cost the same amount as the price of the video recorder split into 6, the children and their dad. What a vindictive spiteful pair of twats. I honestly believe that neither will ever be Paroled. Those parole officers will read up on these bastards, they will be horrified with what they have done, that they’ve shown no remorse and deny them again. I think that They will both die in jail*Whoopee*

Bengal, you have such high hopes for our penal system! ;o) Sadly, one of them just might get out. By the time they hit 80 or so they might be deemed safe to live in society and they’ll ship ’em to some Long Term Care Facility.

That’s a good question about the insurance money…

        • Bengalpuss says:

No msm, i don.t have high hopes for the american penal system, but usually they are pretty difficult to convince to parole you, when you’ve murdered 7 people and shown no remorse. Now if it was england(Uk) Then this grinning cunt would have been paroled years ago. I just think the usa are pretty tough on murdering cunts like this that have taken multiple lives and shown not one ounce of remorse. She screwed herself up, the night that she burned down her mothers home with 5 children, and then boasting about it 3yrs later. Im confident that this Fugly bitch won.t be getting parole.

      • bulldoggy says:

Bengalpuss, you’re back! I was worried there’d been a cave-in in your basement and you were trapped! Miserable for you being in hospital no doubt, so keep away from that soda from now on! Thought you’d mention that fugly broad’s horse face at the very least, so you must still be feeling under the weather.

        • Bengalpuss says:

Bulldoggy, no one gets rid off the puss that quick. And yes she is an ugly cunt, but i was more pissed at her grinning ugly face, does she seem to think what she’s done is funny? Can.t believe that someone would be so wicked as to take 7 lives because they were pissed off at their xmas pressie, but this cunt did. Lets hope her parole is denied. Fucking ugly bastarding horse faced cunt she is, is that better bulldoggy? And thats me and no soda ha ha

The insurance money, about $7000 worth. Was given to Rotas brother Willard. Willard split the money between himself and his older sister and his older brother.Willard would not gab Rhode Island her share of the insurance money for some reason. I think he felt she might’ve had something to do with that. But at that time there was no proof. But the good thing is Rota never got none of the insurance money.

Some people just want to wipe people out for the sheer hate of their breathing, sadly. Many people hate their families but they don’t act on their ultimate feelings. But, some people lack the ability to make good choices. It’s obvious the elevator didn’t go all the way to the top here for either perp – but it’s also obvious this woman was one of those “if I can’t have it, nobody will” types. Thankfully she’s behind bars for the rest of her life, both she and her boyfriend are disastors of one kind or another waiting to happen.

  5. moodymagic says:

I agree slap a bitch’s smirk off her face. These 2 make me sick. 7 people (young kids as well that should have the chance to grow up) died at the hands of these 2. They should be burnt up alive as punishment. Firm believer in match the punishment to the crime.

  6. Tasera says:

What the hell is that bitch smirking at?

  7. awesomeblossom says:

Those children were beautiful and they deserved a long, happy and safe life. Rhoda must be a psycho bitch to even think of doing what she did, much less doing it. She deserves to be lit on fire herself for what she did. May she burn and then die and then burn in hell.

  8. Truth teller says:

Let’s not forget all of the siblings that Orville killed and never got caught, all of the rapes he forced on minors after drugging them, all of the child pornography found in his house, and the fact that Rhoda was a part of all of it. There are way too many victims that never got justice! I know, because I am one of them. I pray to God that they never see the light of day again!

    • Deb Maddox says:

To truth teller. I am sorry to hear that orville wheeler affected your life too. He is an evil man. And I will always be at parole hearings to keep him in prison until he dies. My prayers go out to you and all the other children that he hurt his lifetime

  9. Jesse fonseca says:

I miss them all so much.. 33 yrs later not a day goes by that I don’t think of them..
