Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya & Hamed Shafia

Hellbeasts Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya & Hamed Shafia
Crime: Murder

The Shafia family moved to Canada in 2007. Fifteen years earlier they had fled their homeland Afghanistan and had lived in Australia and Dubai before settling in Montreal.

Mohammad Shafia, the head of the house, prospered in Montreal. He owned commercial property and ran a business buying used cars in North America and shipping them overseas.

Mohammad Shafia is married to Tooba Yahya, and they had 7 children altogether. That’s a lot of children by Canadian standards.

Rona Amir Mohammad and Sahar ShafiaLuckily for the Shafias, “cousin” Rona Amir Mohammad was staying with them and helping to raise the children. At least, that is what they told Canadian authorities. In actuality, Rona Amir was Mohammad Shafia’s first wife. She’d been unable to have children so Mohammad Shafia took a second wife in 1989. Tooba Yahya generously gave their daughter Sahar to Rona Amir Mohammad to raise as her very own.

Life in Canada was not good to Rona Amir Mohammad. In her diary she wrote about how Tooba Yahya, the favourite wife, treated her like a servant. Tooba Yahya made it clear to her she was a dead weight. Mohammad Shafia beat her and “made life a torture,” Rona Amir Mohammad wrote in her diary. Her abusive husband kept her passport so she could not leave Canada and escape her miserable existence.

The unhappy and unfortunate woman used to wander in city parks and cry. She must have felt so very alone. She did ask for a divorce at one point, but Mohammad Shafia denied her request. Possibly he refused because it would be more than a little awkward for a married man to explain to authorities he was divorcing his visiting “cousin”. If the Canadian authorities learned of this secret polygamous relationship and the lies told to garner the family permanent residence status, they could have been deported.

Possibly Mohammad Shafia refused to divorce because he wanted and needed to be in absolute control of his family.

Zainab ShafiaAside from this pesky first wife, Mohammad Shafia was presented with a problematic home life in the shape of his two eldest daughters, Zainab and Sahar. Both beautiful girls, they had problems coping with the very strict boundaries laid out by their parents. They were forbidden to date and to wear revealing clothing. The girls rebelled. They defied their parents and refused to wear the hijab. They also secretly had boyfriends.

Zainab, and Sahar, wanted to enjoy the freedom that other Canadian girls enjoyed, and that was exactly what Mohammad Shafia and Tooba Yahya vehemently opposed. Both girls reported threats and incidents of violence to authorities. The threats and violence came from their father and their brother Hamed who was a chip off the old block.

In 2008 Sahar told her teachers that Hamed had stabbed her in the arm with scissors and that she was so miserable she wanted to kill herself.

The school immediately contacted Batshaw Youth and Family Centres, Montreal’s English-language child protection agency. Workers were sent out to interview the girl, her teachers, her parents, her brother and her sister.

Sahar recanted her story (no doubt due to pressure and threats from her parents and brother) and the agency had no choice but to close the file.

Zainab and Sahar’s younger sister Geeti began to rebel at the restrictive and punitive home life. She started skipping school, failing some classes, stealing and wearing revealing clothing.

Mohammad Shafia and Tooba Yahya did not appreciate this new rebellion in the ranks. Disobedience was not to be tolerated in the Shafia household. The situation in the house continued to deteriorate. Mohammad Shafia laid down the law — his law — but still the teenaged girls’ disobedience continued.

On April 17, 2009 Zainab fled the house in fear of her father and his reign of tyranny. She sought refuge at a women’s shelter. Her father had forbidden Zainab to attend school for a year because she had a boyfriend.

Mohammad Shafia was horribly angry to discover that she’d been dating and murderously angry that she’d fled to a shelter. And if daddy was angry then his Mini-Me son Hamed was angry too — angry and physically abusive.

Zainab’s case was handled by Centre Jeunesse de Montreal, the French-language youth protection agency.

At the time, very unfortunately for the Shafia girls, there was no system in place that allowed or compelled file sharing between all youth protection agencies. Therefore the French-language agency had no idea that there’d been a prior incident with this family handled by Batshaw. Red flags might have arisen if they’d known.

It was a shameful situation, and the system has since been overhauled so that there will hopefully be no more children in danger falling through the cracks.

Zainab complained to workers at the women’s shelter that she had been picked on by her father and brother Hamed who tried to stop her from attending school or dating her boyfriend Ammar Wahib.

“She spoke of psychological and physical violence, chiefly by her brother, and said she was afraid of him,” said a counsellor at the shelter.

Hamed reported his sister Zainab missing. When police arrived at the Shafia home, younger sisters Geeti and Sahar complained of the brutality in their home. They stopped talking, however, when Hamed came to the door.

That evening a child-care worker interviewed the family. One of the girls had a bruise on her face, all spoke of violence in the home, and Sahar and Geeti asked to be removed from the home. Geeti specifically asked to be placed in foster care.

And then Mohammad Shafia came home. (Cue the ominous music.) The children hushed up, and one of the girls retracted her story.

Police and social workers did not pursue the situation any further. WTF? Seriously, WTF? Protocol calls for the Child and Family Services department to decide whether or not to take further action, and no action was taken.

Zainab returned to the Shafia house after 2 weeks at the shelter. Her mother Tooba Yahya had convinced her to come home. Possibly Zainab had been told everything would be all right, that nobody was mad at her.

If that’s what she was told, it was a lie. Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya and son #1 Hamed were unbelievably mad and not just with her. They had found condoms in Sahar’s room. The whore! They had found photos of Sahar wearing short skirts. The slut! They had found photos of Sahar hugging a boy. Prostitute! And Geeti was out of control with her skipping and failing classes, stealing and wearing revealing clothing.

And of course there was the unwanted first wife, Rona Amir, asking for a divorce and raising the girls to be disobedient. Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya and Hamed Shafia were past the point of fed up. They were beyond tolerating any more crap from the teenaged girls and the sulky first wife. They were totally enraged by the lack of respect and obedience displayed by those “honourless” females.

Punishment would be swift, brutal and final.

Shafia carOn June 30, 2009 the Shafia family’s Nissan Sentra was discovered submerged at the bottom of the Rideau Canal at Kingston Mills in Ontario. Constable Brent White arrived on the scene at 10:30 a.m. He at first thought pranksters were responsible because there was barely enough clearance for a car to squeeze through the lock gate and wind up in the water.

“I’m thinking, ‘This is pretty difficult to get that vehicle in that narrow spot… It had to be driven there on purpose,'” Constable White said.

Divers were called in to check out the submerged vehicle. Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, Geeti, 13, and Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, were found dead inside. They had all drowned.

Police officers began to collect evidence at the scene and found pieces of a broken headlight that did not belong to the submerged car.

Shafia victimsAt the same time, Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya and Hamed Shafia showed up at the Kingston police station to file a missing persons report.

Their story was that they’d come from Montreal, had vacationed in Niagara Falls and spent the night at a motel in Kingston. When they awoke in the morning, the girls and “cousin” Rona Amir Mohammad were gone. They suspected Zainab had taken the car keys and had snuck out with the others to go joyriding. Where oh where could they be?

As the car was winched out of the water, police found something very odd about the whole accident scenario. First of all, the ignition and the lights were off. How did the car wind up in the canal if it had been turned off? If this happened at night, why were the lights off?

The car’s front seats were reclined all the way back. How do you drive if your seat is reclined? You don’t.

The driver’s window was open. OK, but why didn’t any of the car’s occupants try to swim to safety through the open window? None of them were wearing seatbelts.

The car was in first gear. There was some fresh damage to the rear end of the vehicle.

The whole setup stank. This was no accident.

Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya and Hamed Shafia were interviewed by the police that first day. They said that the family of 10 people had been travelling in 2 cars — a Lexus SUV and the missing Nissan Sentra. Why then, wondered the police, did this trio arrive at the police station in a Pontiac minivan?

Hamed said that he did NOT stay at the motel that night with the family. No, he drove through the night all the way back home so he could get his laptop and meet with tenants at his dad’s strip mall.

Ontario police followed this up by contacting their Montreal counterparts. They were quite surprised to find that Hamed had reported a collision between the Lexus SUV and a parking barrier that very morning — a collision that broke the Lexus headlight. It was also a collision that Hamed had neglected to tell the Ontario police.

Ontario police pretty much knew who and what they were dealing with by the end of the first day. The three girls and their adult relative had been murdered by hellbeasts Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya and Hamed Shafia. But why and how to prove it?

Happily for us all, the hellish Shafia family killers are lousy liars, lousy schemers and lousy co-conspirators.

The next day Constable Steve Koopman got Mohammad Shafia’s consent to search the Lexus. The remaining pieces of the headlight were taken for analysis. And whadya know! The broken headlight pieces from the death scene fitted perfectly into the broken Lexus headlight!

What the police figured was that the monstrous murderers figured the Nissan carrying the bodies would wind up in the water under its own power in first gear. The car however got hung up on the canal ledge with its wheels spinning, so somebody reached in through the open driver’s window and turned the car off. The Lexus was then used to push the car into the canal.

This theory explained the ignition being off, the car being in first gear, the seats reclined, the window open, the damage to the back and the broken Lexus headlight pieces.

What they could not tell was whether or not the victims were alive or dead before the car hit the water. Either way, they had been incapacitated. There was fresh bruising on the heads of 3 of the victims.

The investigation into the murders immediately focused on the family.

Mohammad ShafiaPolice got wiretap recordings of Mohammad hellbeast Shafia cursing the dead girls as “whores”, “traitors”, “prostitutes” and “honourless girls”. He was also caught on tape saying, “May the devil shit on their graves.” Not nice. Nope, Mohammad Shafia did not sound like at all like a grief-stricken father.

Investigators contacted relatives of the family all over the globe and heard the same things over and over again — Mohammad Shafia had problems with his daughters and cared deeply about his honour. They also learned the “cousin” Rona Amir Mohammad was actually wife #1.

Cellphone records indicated that on June 27, when the family was in the middle of their vacation to Niagara Falls, Hamed’s cellphone was pinging off a tower in the Kingston area. That’s weird unless Hamed was scoping out a good place to murder and to dump a car in a canal.

The motel manager in Kingston told investigators that Mohammad Shafia and Hamed Shafia had checked in for 6 people, not the entire family of 10 they told police.

Ontario police asked Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya and Hamed Shafia to come from their home in Montreal to collect personal items that they had left in the motel rooms. When they arrived, the police took them to the crime scene so that they could explain how they thought the car wound up in the water.

At the scene, police told the three suspects that they’d found a camera at the site, and they were going to analyze it and hopefully find pictures of the car going into the water. That was a lie designed to make them talk.

The three killers didn’t know it was a lie. They also didn’t know that the police had bugged their minivan. So all the way back to Montreal the three yapped away about what the camera could prove and the deaths, and it was all recorded.

“That night, there was no electricity there,” Mohammad Shafia said. “It was pitch darkness. You remember, Tooba?”

“Yes,” she answered.

Later, Mohammad the grieving dad was caught saying (translated from Farsi), “Even if they hoist me up onto the gallows…nothing is more dear to me than my honour.” Especially not his dead daughters and barren first wife.

“This is my word to you: Be I dead or alive, nothing in the world is above than your honour,” he said in another recording.

Wow, that monster’s definition of honour is certainly different from mine. I have known some honourable people (not many but a few) and they were all honest, forthright, dedicated, law-abiding and respectable. Shafia’s version of honour is dishonest, brutal, underhanded and criminal. Shafia’s version of honour is more akin to hubris.

On July 21, 2009, investigators executed a search warrant on the Montreal home and discovered the diary written by Rona Amir Mohammad with entries about the beatings and mistreatment she endured.

They also discovered that Hamed had been busy on his computer before the deaths searching for “where to commit a murder” and if a prisoner could retain control over their real estate. He researched Montreal prisons. He also searched for and downloading photos of bodies of water.

Mohammad POS killer Shafia, 58, Tooba hellbitch Yahya, 42, and Hamed waste of skin Shafia, 21, were charged with 4 counts of 1st-degree murder. The trial lasted for 3 months, and court heard from 58 witnesses. It was the first trial in Canada to be conducted in 4 languages — English, French, Farsi and Spanish.

The murderous parents testified that they were “a liberal family” and had emigrated from Afghanistan because “the women were in constant danger from the Taliban.” Mohammad Shafia testified he did not interfere in his children’s lives, but tried to give them advice. Such a caring father!

Regarding his vile, nasty outbursts on the wiretap, poor Mohammad Shafia said he felt betrayed (cue the violins) seeing the photos of his daughters in revealing attire with their boyfriends, but didn’t really mean to do them actual harm. *snort*

The trial culminated in January 2012 with the jury finding all 3 killers guilty of 1st-degree murder. Hamed Shafia collapsed onto the railing of the prisoner’s box when he heard the verdicts, and Yahya began crying. Good! Cry bitch cry!

“You have each been convicted of the planned and deliberate murder of four members of your family,” said Judge Robert Maranger, of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice before he passed sentence. “It’s a verdict clearly supported by the evidence presented at this trial. It is difficult to conceive of a more despicable, more heinous crime.

“There is nothing more honourless than the deliberate murder of, in the case of Mohammad Shafia, three of his daughters and his wife, in the case of Tooba Yahya, three of her daughters and a stepmother to all her children, in the case of Hamed Shafia three of sisters and a mother.

“The apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your twisted notion of honour, a notion of honour that is founded upon the domination and control of women, a sick notion of honour that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.”

Wow, Judge Maranger pulled no punches. And he said it so politely. Bravo! Too bad nobody spoke to Shafia like that before he killed his family members, but he wouldn’t have listened anyway.

Judge Maranger then imposed the mandatory sentences of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years. Hopefully none of these killers will ever see the light of day again.

The convicted murderers were allowed to speak after the verdict and all, predictably, protested their innocence.

“We are not criminal,” said the hellbeast Mohammad Shafia, “We are not murderers. We didn’t commit the murder and this is unjust.”

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Go tell it to your dead daughters!

Tooba Yahya said, “I’m not a murderer and I’m a mother.” So what if she’s a mother. She lured Zainab home from the shelter, and she travelled with the girls and her co-wife on that fateful trip. For all we know, she held their heads under water.

Hamed Shafia said, “Sir, I did not drown my sisters anywhere.” Maybe it was an awkward translation but it sure doesn’t sound like, “I didn’t kill them” to me. He may not have drowned them, but maybe he hit them on the head. He was certainly driving the Lexus SUV that pushed them into the canal. Innocent he is not.

So the three murderers have had their day in court and they’ve been found guilty. They will of course attempt to have more days in court as they appeal the verdicts, but they were such pathetic liars, schemers and co-conspirators that I would be very surprised if they have any luck. It’s just too bad that they weren’t pathetic at killing too.

Unhappily these murders became known in the media as “honour killings” which many took to mean that Mohammad Shafia had some religious basis for his despicable actions. Canada’s Muslim community leaders and scholars felt so moved by this case to decry the fiction that Islam condones such mistreatment of women.

“Murder is … haram (prohibited) to the severest degree,” said Imam Sikander Ziad Hashmi of the Islamic Society of Kingston, “and cannot be justified in any way.” Period, end of story.

The only “honour” the killers were interested in defending was their own personal hubris — nothing religious about that!

So rot forever, Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya and Hamed Shafia, and then go straight to hell as the dishonourable despicable demons you are.

Mohammed, Hamed and Tooba all need to rot in hell. Those 3 beautiful young girls did not have to die. For what! And poor Rona all the abuse she endured. Were was the family loyalty and love.

It is important that people realize that when possible, they are responsible for extricating themselves from situations of danger. If you are being abused leave and don’t come back. Don’t recant a claim of abuse to the police. We all face great battles in our lives, never back down or cower to someone who beats you. Leave, complete separation, permanent separation. I knew Zainab, she was kind, shy and beautiful.

Father: “We are not criminal, we are not meurrder….”Mother: ” I am not a meurrder, and I am a mother, a mother. Technically, the father is correct. Sharia Law completely sanctions the father to violently murder his first wife and daughters – who live at his pleasure.”Shafia’s first wife wrote in a diary that her husband beat her and made life a torture, while his second wife called her a servant.”Yeah right, does someone want to remind me again how ‘wonderful’ polygamous marriages are for the multiple wives and children?Evidently, those “core principles in a free and democratic society that all Canadians enjoy” failed to extend to the first wife whose polygamous husband beat and then murdered her. Well, at least her husband is monogamous now!”Geeti … [declared] to authority figures that she wanted to be placed in foster care, according to the prosecution.”Geeti’s behavior seems consistent with that of molested children. What child ASKS to be placed in foster care? What civilized society imposes an Islamic death sentence on a child rather than place that child into foster care?!Father: “Even if they hoist me up onto the gallows … nothing is more dear to me than my honor.”Now we’re talking! I vote for HIS idea as to what his own punishment should be. Quick and cheap. After all, we’d be doing him the same favor that Islamists do for us Westerners. Namely, we’d be sending him to Allah to save him from sinning anymore. Islamic ‘honor’ intact for his visit to Hell.P.S. Brian Williams’ newscast failed to mention Islam and Muslims. Instead, apparently, those highly enriched Afghans spontaneously decided to honor murder four family members. The expert lady interviewed on the news claimed that honor murders are a feature of patriarchal societies where men believe that men own women.Of course, silly me, that explains it all. DUH!Egghead

Please keep your bullshit inside your ass.

I feel sorry for these girls but even I know that religion has nothing to do with. Heck, before Islam girls were killed as soon as they were born because they were girls. Because of Islam a huge percentage of those killings stopped.

Honor killing is about culture and tradition. It is written in the Quran that you should NEVER kill a human being because it is the murder of mankind (A huge shitload of fucking sins). Likewise a murder of a Muslim is HARAAM(Forbidden). If you do either one, you ain’t going to heaven. This does not stop the ‘honorable’ father’s now does it?

Let me explain. My parent’s were raised in Pakistan and came here to Canada. I am raised in Canada. I can tell you that the way my parents think and the way that I think is at opposite ends of the universe. They are okay with some things but there are somethings one must never do. I took a year of after high school, my dad didn’t like it but was okay with it because we had gone to pakistan during my 2nd semester (I was the one who forced them to go, worst decision of my life). Then that gap year I had problems and now I am not going to university this year. Apparently this is SHAMEFUL to my father. I keep on telling him I don’t give a shit. I don’t care what people think but he always keeps on saying “I stopped meeting with them (a certain stuck up relative)because I can’t show my face to them.” I asked him, why would you care? Why do you care? and he answered: yes I care about what people think about me. Yet he also told me once that people don’t have time to think about what you are doing because they are busy in their own lives.
Bottom line – He grew up in a place where people DO give a shit about what you do. Where you have a ‘status’ and shit. It’s hard to change his ways and he will think like that. It has nothing to do with Religion.

  3. 2cute says:

Those girls were gorgeous! They had so much to live for and it’s just disgusting that those abusive menfolk thought they had the right to snuff out their lives like that.

  4. dogwalker says:

Violence against women and domestic violence are not unique to the Muslim community. They occur throughout every society. This case wasn’t about religion — it was about a pair of misogynistic males thinking they had the right to control and destroy the females in their family, and a pathetic excuse for a woman who bought into that stupidity.

  5. Eve says:

Those beautiful girls had so much potential! Their killers shouldn’t see the light of day again, EVER! Heaven forbid their murdering brother should get out and marry! No woman is safe around that misogynistic monster!

  6. Lourd says:

such a lovely family. so lovely they have to kill their own skin. that’s what they call honour! BURN!

  7. Trace says:

The son Hamed was born into a poisonous, disfunctional family but I am not sorry for him. He benefitted from it, and he showed no mercy to his sisters.

  8. bengalpuss29 says:

Three beautiful girls and a beautiful women all snuffed out because of some twisted bastards notion of honour. I hate to say this but women in the muslim religion are basically there to have children, cook, clean and be a slave to her husband and male relatives, or any male for that matter. The father classed his daughters and first wife as pieces of shit and prostitutes. But this isn.t a one off, its actually frequent and the poor women can.t say nothing, because if she does she gets a slap or a punch. The social workers should have heard warning bells when the girls were telling them how miserable they were and wanted to leave. But when the father came to the door they clammed up. Do they train social workers to be stupid cunt’s. A blind person could have sussed out they were frightened. Lets hope that those murdering bastards stay in jail for a very long time. And when released are deported back to afghanistan. Obviously he was lying to the goverment saying that his first wife was his cousin.
