Crimes: Murder.

It seems a long while since I’ve actually posted a story about a Canadian killer. Well, dear readers, I have one for you today. It is also one of those stories of murder/suicide where the suicide part fails. It’s amazing how hard killers find it to kill themselves.

Before 6:00 a.m. on September 16, 2015, police were called to a home in the 1200 block of Vista Heights in Victoria, British Columbia. A 911 call had been placed by Dan Cunningham, who had received a highly disturbing email from his estranged wife, Kaela Mehl. He asked that police do a welfare check on her and their daughter, Charlotte. He was soon proved tragically right to be so concerned.

Dan Cunningham and Kaela Mehl had married in 2011, and split up in May 2015. The biggest issue between them after their separation was the custody of their beautiful baby, Charlotte.

Kaela Mehl could not accept the idea that Dan Cunningham and his family would be a big part of her daughter’s life. It seems she really, really hated the Cunninghams. She hated them so much that she actually hired private investigators to look for dirt on them. She secretly recorded all conversations she had with them. And she even followed them herself. All of this effort was to prove that Charlotte wouldn’t be safe with the Cunninghams. And even though she didn’t find any real evidence, she still went to the police and the Ministry for Children and Family Development in the hope that they would take her side. They didn’t.

The courts didn’t take Kaela Mehl’s side either. The Cunninghams’ access to Charlotte was being increased despite the woman’s contention the baby wouldn’t be safe.

charlotte cunninghamAnd so we get to September 16, 2015 (less than half a year since the couple split up). Kaela Mehl couldn’t come to terms with the prospect of losing custody of Charlotte, so she concocted a most evil, hellbeastly plan. Rather than share Charlotte’s life with the Cunninghams, Kaela Mehl decided to deprive Charlotte of her life.

The monstrous mother had on hand enough Zopiclone (sleeping pills) to kill Charlotte and herself. She even researched fatal doses of Zopiclone on the Internet.

But first things first — she had to write a murder/suicide note. In it she wrote, “I don’t want to spend the rest of my life fighting a losing battle… I know no other way to protect Charlotte.”

Did researching fatal doses and writing the note make the hellbitch rethink her awful plan? Did it make her research how to share custody amicably? Hell no. Kaela Mehl was still determined that Charlotte should die.

The horrid woman then mixed the Zopiclone with some yogurt and fed it spoonful by spoonful to the 18-month-old. She didn’t even wait for the pills to finish the job — Kaela Mehl smothered Charlotte to death.

With her baby now beyond any help, the killer finished writing her suicide note and emailed it to Dan Cunningham, his parents and the family lawyer. I don’t know if she took her “fatal” dose of sleeping pills before or after she sent the email. I don’t know if she wanted a chance to survive, but when the police arrived to do that welfare check, they found her still alive.

In my mind, Kaela Mehl wanted to live to see the devastation on the Cunninghams’ faces as they tried to cope with baby Charlotte’s murder. She could have written and printed out the note, leaving it to be found with her body. But no, she emailed it to several people! And only after Charlotte was dead. And did she even trust the Zopiclone to kill her? Why then did she smother her baby? Surely it was a kinder thought that her baby slept peacefully as she died, not struggling to breathe.

You may disagree with me, but in my mind this was far more a murder plot than a murder/suicide plot.

Regardless, Dan Cunningham essentially saved Kaela Mehl’s life when he called 911. The killer was charged with 1st-degree murder.

kaela-mehlIt took 2 long years to get Kaela Mehl to trial. On October 4, 2017, she was found guilty of 1st-degree murder by a BC Supreme Court jury. Her attorneys requested she be found “not criminally responsible due to mental disorder”, but the jury rejected that. Kaela Mehl was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

Dan Cunningham made a statement after the verdict. “I saved your life by calling 911,” he said. “I’m glad that I did, so that I can watch you live out the rest of your life regretting your actions and knowing that you have no one to blame but yourself.”

The man also made a point of telling the killer that he’s carrying on with life and has a new family and future to look forward to. I’m glad he said that, so that the hellbitch won’t have the satisfaction of thinking she destroyed his life too.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to Dan Cunningham, his parents, and all those who mourn the loss of baby Charlotte. RIP baby girl.

What a sick hell bitch definitely not any kind of mother. The poor child and her father have all my simpathy.

I agree with Moodymagic. A sick hell bitch! Too bad they just can’t take themselves out instead of depriving their babies of the chance at a wonderful life. RIP angel baby

Respect to that! Women who do these things to little babies don’t deserve to be called mothers. In fact, I don’t think they deserve to be called humans!

Ironic that she was “so worried” about Charlotte’s safety with her ex, when in reality SHE was the one the baby needed protection from!

I’m so pleased that Dan told her that he’s got a new family and has moved on because she wanted him to suffer, by telling her that, that’ll be a mind fuck, he’ll always be devastated at that cunts actions, but she was the one who that beautiful little girl needed protecting from, and by Dan saying what he said in the victim statement can only drive her bonkers and hopefully she makes a better suicide attempt and does humanity a favour.
