Crimes: Elder Abuse

I feel so bad for 83-year-old Deloris Pettiford. Crimes against elderly people infuriate me, especially when they’re committed by family members. I spent decades looking after my own handicapped mother, and wrecked my back doing it, so I fully understand that caregiving is not for everyone. Being a caregiver for a relative has to come from a loving place in your heart because it involves a lot of sacrifice. Unfortunately for Deloris Pettiford, there was no love in her family’s hearts for her.

Since 2002 the elderly woman from Garden City, Georgia, USA lived with her daughter, Georgette Denise Backman (pictured above), her son-in-law, Steven Raymond Backman, and her grandson, Georgio Backman. Those three people were supposed to be taking care of her. Tragically, those three people were far more interested in her money than in her.

Mercifully, somebody noticed that there was something wrong going on with Deloris Pettiford, and that somebody filed complaints of financial exploitation, elder abuse and neglect. Kudos to that person!

Garden City police responded to the complaints in November 2014 and showed up at 8 Lynn Drive to check out the situation. I’m sure they were horrified by what they found.

Deloris Pettiford was lying on a couch and barely responsive. She’d obviously been on that couch for weeks and weeks — maybe months. She was covered in maggots and flies, and her body had open wounds and sores.

Deloris Pettiford had not been to see a doctor for at least 9 months. She had no medications, and she was deprived of the walking devices she needed to get around.

Naturally the poor woman was taken immediately to hospital. Doctors found she needed immediate surgery. The poor old dear had ulcers. She was also suffering from malnutrition and neglect.

So to recap, these odious, hellbeastly Backmans had plopped Grandma onto a couch with no means of getting off of it, and then left her there without any medicine or medical attention, and likely not much food. I didn’t read anything about pee or feces, so maybe they took her to the loo (I pray that was so), but they mostly left her to sit and literally rot. I can’t imagine what it was like for Deloris Pettiford to sit and watch maggots eating her flesh, and to know that her own daughter and grandson didn’t give a flying rat’s ass about her.

Investigators went through the home and seized all financial records they could find. No surprise — Georgette Backman, Steven Backman and Georgio Backman were using the old lady’s money to support themselves. *shock*

Police arrested the hellbeastly trio and charged them with cruelty to a person 65 and older. I get the feeling that if the hellish situation had continued for much longer, they would have been facing murder charges.

Georgette Backman, 44, Steven Backman, 46, and Georgio Backman, 20 pled guilty on February 20, 2016 to elder abuse. Of course they did — it’s not like they had any defense to offer.

Georgette Backman was sentenced to 7 years in prison, but she will have to serve only 2 years. The balance of her sentence will be suspended under the condition she doesn’t violate any laws. WTF? That’s awfully lenient, in my opinion.

Steven Backman was given a 3-year suspended sentence. WTF?!?! That’s even more lenient! The man did live in that house, didn’t he? He used Grandma’s money, didn’t he? He didn’t clean and bandage Grandma’s wounds, did he? He didn’t try to make Grandma’s life better in any way, did he? So why is he let off the hook?

Georgio Backman was sentenced to a 5-year term, but only has to serve 2 years. Damn!

I’m sorry, but I have a real problem with Chatham County Superior Court Judge John E. Morse Jr. if he felt those sentences were appropriate.

Assistant DA Margaret Hinchey DeLeon had asked for 15- and 20-year sentences. She must’ve been quite disappointed that these hellbeasts got nowhere near that long to serve.

When Deloris Pettiford was discharged from hospital, she was moved to a facility where she was placed under Hospice care. Bless her heart, I hope she’s safe and comfortable now.

I wish Georgette Denise Backman, Steven Raymond Backman and Georgio Backman a lot of misery in their futures. Maybe then they’ll learn compassion and sympathy and ultimately become more human.

Whoever handed down that poor sentence seems to be a racist. The black people serve time and the white guy gets probation. WTF?

    • Jeni C says:

I was thinking the same thing, Jessica! The judge really didn’t try to mask their racism, did they? They probably wouldn’t have gotten much worse of a sentence if the elderly family member died, either! Wow…this is just sad and ridiculous.

    • Kim says:

      Arent they black?

      • Jeni C says:

The daughter of the victim is black, the victim’s son-in-law is white, and their son is mixed/bi-racial. The daughter and grandson of the victim received prison sentences, while the son-in-law (who is married to the victim’s daughter, and is white) got a suspended sentence and didn’t have to serve any prison time. That doesn’t make sense. He was just as responsible for ignoring and mistreating the victim, just as much as his wife and son were responsible. Shouldn’t they have been charged with taking advantage of an elderly person and their finances? They were spending the victim’s monthly checks and benefits every month, weren’t they? How could they not be charged with that?

i think they ALL should have been locked in the deepest dungeon and had the key melted down, but in this case i think it might just be a misguided effort on the court’s part. the two that were related directly by blood found themselves with the heaviest sentences, PRESUMABLY because in the eyes of the judge they should have had more emotional investment in NOT abusing their mother/grandmother. idle speculation and has absolutely no bearing, but seems as likely as anything, really.

It IS Georgia, after all. Grandma is presumably black, as well. If she were white, I’ll bet you the sentences would be closer to what the prosecutor asked. Sad racism is still so blatant in some areas.

    Very Despicable and Appalling

This is disgusting that poor woman. I wish her all the best. These sentences are a joke.

I think the white fella got a more lenient sentence because he wasn’t blood related, her daughter and grandson were blood related, now to do that to an old lady is wicked, but to do that to your own mother and grandmother is the lowest of the low, i don’t think it has anything to do with race, thats my opinion anyway. Cleo, i find it hard to believe that those 3fuckturd’s took that poor old lady to use the bathroom, i mean if they can let her fester with maggots on her then i’m sure that leaving her wallowing in her own piss and shit wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow in that house. I have to say the person who made that phone call saved that poor woman’s life, thats how it should be, don’t ignore what you see or know, report it, if your wrong no harm done, but if your right and you never said anything then your just as bad as three little piggy’s. Report it if your concerned, you may save somebodys life!

Too true dpo, i don’t know how people can not say anything, my conscience would make me go nutty. Yes definately say something!

I have no doubt in my mind that these three shitbags would have let the old lady die in misery on that couch if someone hadn’t reported them to the authorities. And I’ll bet they wouldn’t have reported her death either so they could keep collecting her pension cheques. They’re all three equally guilty so I don’t understand how the sentences could vary so much.
